longer school day, no. give kids a break! i don't know how school kids can be in school as long as they already are, then do a couple hours' worth of homework, AND play sports or practice music or have any sort of a social life.
but a shorter summer vacation, sure. basing the schoolyear on an agrarian calendar is stupid and outdated. that's why, even though we don't run a year-round homeschool, we generally do a little "summer school" anyway. i'd be all in favor of seeing u.s. schools take a shorter summer break, altho' i don't think that necessarily needs to translate into a longer schoolyear. longer or more frequent breaks at other times of year plus a 6-week summer break sounds good & healthy to me.
(esp for people in hotter climes -like texas, say :-), where summer is miserable anyway.)
